Yes, a B.Voc degree is valid when a UGC-recognized university awards it. The Bachelor of Vocation is a bachelor-level degree specified by UGC. UGC says it counts at par with other bachelor's degrees wherever the rule asks for a bachelor's degree in any discipline.
Under NEP 2020 and the National Credit Framework, a three-year B.Voc carries about 120 credits. You can exit with a UG Certificate at about 40 credits or a UG Diploma at about 80. The Academic Bank of Credits can store those credits for up to seven years, if your institution is registered and uploads them.
Validity has limits. The B.Voc in Healthcare Assistance & Integrated Patient Care prepares you for patient care, coordination and supervision roles. It does not make you a nurse, a physiotherapist or a doctor. Some government posts ask for a specific subject degree, and a B.Voc will not meet that rule.

Why is a B.Voc a legally valid degree?
UGC specified the B.Voc under Section 22(3) of the UGC Act, and the Gazette of India published it on 19 January 2013.
A UGC circular then said a B.Voc counts for competitive exams that ask for a bachelor's degree in any discipline. A UGC letter dated 4 August 2016 told universities to treat B.Voc holders as eligible for courses that take any bachelor's degree.
Two things make a B.Voc valid in plain terms:
- The university must be UGC-recognized.
- The degree name must be one UGC has specified.
How do NEP 2020 and the National Credit Framework change the B.Voc?
NEP 2020 wants skill training and classroom study to count the same. The National Credit Framework (NCrF) turns that idea into numbers.
- One credit equals 30 notional learning hours.
- A student earns 40 credits for 1,200 hours in a year.
- A three-year bachelor's degree sits at levels 4.5, 5 and 5.5. That matches NHEQF level 5.5 for the final year.
Here is the ladder for the healthcare B.Voc:
| Exit | Award | Approx. credits | NCrF level |
|---|---|---|---|
| After year 1 | UG Certificate in Healthcare Assistance | 40 | 4.5 |
| After year 2 | UG Diploma | 80 | 5 |
| After year 3 | B.Voc Degree | 120 | 5.5 |
How does the Academic Bank of Credits work?
The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) is a digital store for your credits. Think of it as a bank account for study.
Create your APAAR ID. It is a 12-digit student ID linked to your Aadhaar and DigiLocker.
Study at a registered institution.
Your institution uploads your credits. You cannot send documents to ABC yourself.
Pause when life demands it.
Redeem your credits when you return, inside the time window.
The rules that are most important:
- The credits are valid for up to 7 years and the awarding institution is required to accept them.
- Redeemed credits cannot be used again.
- Credits from skill courses in vocational degrees qualify. Only credits earned in 2021-22 or later count.
- If you build a degree across several institutions, you must earn at least 50% of the credits at the one that awards it.
As of June 2026, PIB had reported that there are 26 crore APAAR IDs. There are almost 3,000 registered institutions.
This program is aligned with ABC. Before you rely on re-entry, check that the university appears in the ABC directory at abc.gov.in.
